Money may not grow on trees. But I’m living proof (and you might be, too) that it sometimes can fall into your lap.
I was watching the Chicago Sunday morning news a while back. And somewhere in between coverage of one of the Windy City’s unending list of parades and their weekly cooking segment – there was a brief, four minute story that caught my attention: The Illinois Treasurer’s I-Cash program.
No, not the program that involves transponders for your car.
And, apparently, the Illinois Treasurer has over over 2 billion dollars in cash (and over 20 million shares of stocks and mutual funds) to return to Illinois residents.
Better yet, one in four Illinois adults who search the I-Cash website discovers property to claim.
Too good to be true?
No! Because I soon discovered I was one of those lucky residents! After entering my name in an easy-to-use online form, I discovered that I had nearly $250 due to me – thanks to a utility deposit I didn’t even remember paying! (That claim, by the way, morphed into a fun night for the kids and me at a Broadway-in-Chicago performance!)
A fluke? I decided to test it out on Facebook – using a handful of my Illinois-based friends. And the results were that two out of the first five people I entered had claims! (Note to Marcus L., you have some money waiting for you! Same to you, Kathleen H. – you have two refunds from State Farm with your name on them!)
So if you live in Illinois – you may be thanking me, as well.
Curious to see if you have something to claim?
If you don’t find a claim today, be sure to check back in a few months because hundreds of thousands of new properties are added to the Illinois Treasurer’s I-Cash program during the year. And, if you want to be a really good pal, do what I did. Enter the names of some of your friends. It’s easy to do.
Just imagine how good you’ll feel when you let someone know that you found them some unclaimed cash or property!
By the way, I was actually compensated to write this post. But the irony of it all is that I was contacted about doing this long after I found my recovered security deposit from Illinois’ I-Cash program. That made me all the happier to write this post and share my experiences. Now stop reading! And go see if you have some money to claim!
