RADIO: How Parenting Styles Are Passed Down Through Generations

Posted October 8, 2012 by jimhigley

Most of us learned how to parent from the same source: Our own parents.

And, as a result, it’s not uncommon for some of us to use the same parenting styles we were raised with on our own children. For many, that’s a win-win proposition. But for others, it may bring some parenting styles that need to stop.

That’s what today’s show is all about. Our guest is Dr. Fran Walfish, author of The Self-Aware Parent. Dr. Walfish is a child and family therapist based in Beverly Hills. You may have seen her on “The Doctors” or “NBC Nightly News.” She’s smart. She’s direct. And she offers some great advice to help you understand what kind of parenting styles you have. And- most importantly – she’ll give you strategies for improving those styles that need to change.

In today’s show, we’ll talk about:

  • How children learn far more through their experiences than through words
  • Why you must have a level of self-awareness to be be able to change
  • Why it’s critical you help children learn how to accept disappointment
  • Why it’s vital that all parents understand their own parenting styles
  • The most common parenting styles you need to avoid
  • How to teach children about feelings
  • Why parents who express their own anger inappropriately are harming their children
  • Top Tips for how to be a win-win parent
  • Why you must nurture and praise your own child’s independence

You’ll also enjoy today’s Huggies “Bottoms Up!” Spotlight on Dad. Our guest is Vince DiCaro of the National Fatherhood Initiative - an organization dedicated to giving our nation’s children a brighter future by educating and engaging fathers.
