Moms & Dads: LISTEN to This!

I often talk about my “30 second rule” – the general guideline of keeping our parental lectures down to a half a minute because, well, no kid wants to really listen to a parent go on and on and on and on and…

Several professionals say we – as parents – should listen 80% of the time with our kids. I don’t know if it’s 80%, 75%, or 87%. But it’s pretty high. Listen. A lot. It’s one of the most important things we can give to our kids. Listen. Try to understand. Gain insight into how they feel. What they think.

A childhood friend of mine sent me this the other day. Just one more reason why we need to be outstanding listeners.

And with that, I’ll stop lecturing.

Have a great day.

What a great reminder. I try to do this, but sometimes I fail at it. Often times while cooking dinner, my 9 year old son sits in the kitchen while I cook and talks to me. Many times I want to kick myself for not stopping and look him in the eyes while he is telling me about his day or whatever is on his mind. Someday I’ll be cooking for two people and my kids will be out of the house and I’ll miss those special moments.

Hey thanks for the note. It’s a simple reminder, isn’t it….but it sure works with my kids…a couple of them in their 20s!
